Generating routes

If your Web Mapping Application has this feature enabled, the Routing task allows you to build routes between 2 or more stops.

In this section:

Routing Tools

Tool Description
1. Drive Time: This route type generates routes based on the shortest drive time. Drive time is based on posted speed limit. If speed limit is not posted the default is 20mph. A time penalty is also imposed for traffic lights.
2. Shortest Distance: This route type generates routes based on the shortest distance.
3. Bicycle: This route type generates routes based on streets most appropriate for bicyclists. Low volume, slower speed streets, and bicycle or multiuse facilities are preferanced over larger, more conjected streets.
4. Add Stops: A location added directly to the map, or via the search tool, with this checked adds a stop to the route. Two (2) or more stops create a route. The route hits stops in the order they were entered (unless Optimized is checked).
5. Add Barriers: A location added directly to the map, or via the search tool, with this checked adds a barrier to the map. A street with a barrier makes it untraversable. Existing barriers mark streets the City has closed.

Hover over an existing barrier to get more information. Adding your own barriers lets the user re-route to alternative streets.

Note: Barriers must be placed directly on a street segment.

Note: Barriers are only visable when zoomed in to a certain extent. If you place a barrier through either the map or a search the map will re-center and zoom in where necessary.
6. Search: Both addresses and street intersections can be searched. To search for an address enter as much as you know. The search is smart enough to decipher most spellings:
"123 Glenn", "123 E Glenn", "123 east glenn avenue"

Similarly the search is smart enough to decipher intersections. Simply enter as much as you know for each street with a dividing character between the two:
"college & main", "North College Street / E Glenn Av"

Use the following symbols to divide streets:
/ \ | & @

When found a marker is added to the map with a label containing the found search term.
7. Get Route: Once the user has placed desired stops, any barriers, and selected which route type clicking this button will generate a route. Once complete the route will be drawn on the map and turn directions will appear.

Afterwards the user can add more stops or barriers. They can change route type or check Optimize. After making changes click Get Route again to generate a new route. The old route will be replaced.
8. Optimized: Checking this box will re-order stops for the most optimized route. The first stop and last stop are always preserved, but any middle stops will be re-ordered.

Note: When using fewer than 5 stops optimized routes are rarely different than the default route.
9. Reset: Clicking this button removes any stops or barriers placed by the user.

How to build a route

The following is a brief description on how to build a route.

  1. Select a route type
  2. Place stops
  3. Place barriers (Optional)
  4. Generate Route

Routing results

Once a route is generated turn-by-turn directions appear.

Tool Description
1. Total distance: Value represents approximate distance of entire route.
2. Total time: Value represents approxiamte time for entire route.

Note: Total time is only shown for shortest drive time and shortest distance. It is assumed that bicycle traffic is moving well below posted speed limits. Furthmore, due to riding styles it is too variable to estimate a time for bicycle routing.
3. Turn directions: Turn directions offer turn-by-turn directions for the generated route. Approximate distances between turns are given to help with navigation.
Routes: The generated route will be displayed on the map.
